SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) - One of Elks Lodge No. 6’s longstanding community service initiatives, the Dave Hamm Bike Drive, began in 2007 when lodge member Dave Hamm donated a single bicycle to the lodge's Toys for the Troops program. His generosity inspired an annual bicycle drive that continues to serve local children.

Following Hamm’s passing in 2009, Vietnam veteran and longtime Elk Richard Cherry ensured the program’s continuation. Today, Elks Lodge No. 6 maintains a dedicated Dave Hamm Fund through which the lodge donates more than 15 bicycles each year.

This season, lodge members assembled and delivered 22 bicycles, along with numerous toys. For the third consecutive year, donations will benefit children served by Greenhaven Soccer and the nonprofit organization Outside the Walls, which supports families of incarcerated parents.
Leading Knight of Elks Lodge No. 6 Carol Mitchell assisted with the delivery of the bicycles and contributed three gift certificates from the Sutterville Bike Shop.

“This program reflects the heart of what Elks do, bringing hope and joy to children who need it most,” Mitchell said. “Seeing the impact these bikes have on local families makes all the effort worthwhile.”
